With a canon you can...
I have bought my self a new camera to begin a new hobby. After a long consideration I bought the canon EOS 600d, which I have been fooling around with trying to master all its functionality. It is harder than it looks! So many configurations, averture, shutter time, ISO etc. But lot of fun. So the next step was to publish the pictures. Not that I have high expectation on that anyone will be using my pictures, even less seeing them, I have still configured a small picture CMS - ZenPhoto. My gallery of pictures will be uploaded here.

DNSSEC and SSHFP
I have added one more layer of security on my linux servers. Mostly because I can. so I have updated my wiki with a how to configure SSHFP at gratisdns. There seems to be a lack of god guides on how to configure SSHFP. however there a lots information on how and why to enable DNSSEC and avoid man in the middle attacks.
There are some good articles around that explains most of it, so im not going into details, but you can find some good information here written by Peter Makholm(danish).
Configuring DNSSEC with DK-hostmaster and gratisdns was straight forward. DK-hostmaster has good how to on the subject.
The next thing we need are systems that supports dnssec instead of plugins for browsers etc.

Water cooling
I recently found some old pictures from my water cooling project back in summer 2002. The primary goal from the project was to lower the noise as the fans inside the cabinet was extremely noisy back then. The heater is fro
m an old FIAT 127. The project totally costed roughly 120$ including pump and fittings. It doesn't look nice, but it for sure was effecient. During intensive CPU load temperature would never rise above 46 degres celsius. The computer now adays is loong gone and has been replaced by laptops and tablets instead. The CPU was an AMD athlon Thunderbird 900Mhz equiped with Asus Geforce 2 or something. You can read more about it and find more pictures here.

Summer vacation over
Returned home from Vietnam after a good summer holyday. For those who are connected with me on facebook, you can take a look on the photos here. Nice country, great people and great place and not last, low prices on every thing. Would be nice to return back some time in the future and se what has changed. I can highly recommend Sapa, Halong bay, Hoi an and Ho Chi Min City as places to visit. Don't miss the local homestays when visiting Sapa. for a trecking experience.

Apache SSL and virtual domains
I have written some short info on how to do, if you would like to run your server with https and virtual domains and avoid the nagging message, that this certificate is not valid. You can read more here https://wiki.notfound.dk/. I wanted to enhance my security on my webpages eg. when logging on my CMS, and wiki from unsecure networks. To do so I have created certificates at Cacert.org and installed on my server. It is currently working on https://notfound.dk, https://ifound.dk, https://wiki.notfound.dk, https://hydrogen.notfound.dk.

Updated servers to debian 6 squeeze
I have just upgraded two servers from stable into debian 6 squeeze stable. Only very few problems arised.
Apache
Webpages didnt load correcty due to a new configuration in PHP. Debian is now limiting the use of PHP in home directories.
After realizing this by opening php5.conf in apache configuration directory, it took five seconds to comment out. And apache now works fine.
Dokuwiki
Smaller problems with dokuwiki. Had to reestablish some symlinks and afterwards everything worked smooth again.
Sys-RV
Some old but not entirey removed programs was confusing the upgrade into multistart of daemons during boot. After purgning configurations scripts from /etc/init.d/ everything was fine.
All in all a smooth installation. Thank you debian.

Mini vpn between two sites
I have for long time wanted a VPN connection between two locations, to make computer support easier and in time establish a better backup solution. Currently I am using unison, manually from my laptops.
Both locations have a linksys wrt54g which made the solution a lot easier. On dd-wrt there was a tutorial on openVPN and howto configure the two routers. I have written some small instructions on how to use it on my wiki for those who are interested, in a similar setup. It should be a matter of just copy/paste, and you're god to go online.
availability, throughput, latency and ping seems very fine. it also maintains the connection, and comes back online after the other location has been rebooted.

Adobe Flash forces us to stay in the stone age
I just realized that Adobe Flash is 32bit only leaving me with a feeling of this is WROOOOONG in so many ways. Dad is certainly not impressed!
I just realized how much I agree with Apple not allowing flash on their iPhones!
Currently I can run some flash applications on a 64 debian client with ndiswrapper, but http://yousee.tv doesn't work!
How hard can it be to release a 64bit version of flash, c'mon, it shouldn't be nothing more than a few recompiles.

openAFS testing
I have/am looking for some sort of distributed filesystem that spans over 2 or 3 servers allowing me for fast access to files when home, and easy access when not home from my laptops. I hoped AFS was the answer, but it takes to much administering and speed isnt' what I has hoping for. Other drawbacks are lack of reiserfs filesystem which my server unfortunatly runs as filesystem.
It looks lke that I am stuck using my existing Unison solution and keep syncing with 2 servers. For others wanting to test Openafs, do remember to install kerberos and read the guide.
Succesfully setup kerberos and openAFS, then follow this link for a debian howto article on Openafs .
On the bright side I did manage to setup a linux afs server, linux client and one windows client. I will give it some testing just for fun :)
